Loved hearing this episode. My Grandfather had a cattle ranch outside Winnett. I spent an unforgettable summer out there before leaving to go to UCLA. It was long days driving a swather cutting hay, but I also spent evenings riding my favorite horse or playing softball under the lights with the locals cowboys. I met some wonderful people that summer and the experience had a profound effect on me. In fact, it was a simple comment during a post game conversation in Stockman's Bar that inspired me to make the documentary film CLASS C: THE ONLY GAME IN TOWN. It was 1977, and girls basketball had just started again in High Schools across the country, thanks to the passage of Title 9, a new federal law. Being a city boy from Billings, I didn't think much of our West High Girls bball team, they were terrible. BUT, to these cowboys in Winnett, with daughters on the Class C team, it meant something more... it meant something to passionately root for, because they were competitive. I took note. Anyway, I'm thrilled to hear Winnett has built new Community Center. I saw first hand how much pride and love they have for their home. These communities need to take proactive measures to keep thriving and not just surviving.
