The irony that Pat Williams said that about favoring Hillary Clinton and now Carol Williams is calling for Alani to duck. There's so much chaos that makes no sense it's insane. That's why I started my new organization, Life1st. It's really simple if you just stick to the values that matter.
I am still so shocked, and I will have a long memory over just how the Montana Democratic Party is treating Alani Bankhead and practically laying out "the red carpet," for Bodnar who is and may I be frank, running against their candidate!! I am disgusted by the many top tier Democrats with the badges of service ignoring the fact that we the people voted for Alani Bankhead and Seth Bodnar ran for nothing; that by default he will be on the ballot because he chose to be there as an Independent, which as we know too often spoil elections. In my estimation these members have shot the party in the foot and will hobble them now and in the future. They better pull their act together and get behind THEIR candidate or the party is doomed; I mean their version of the party. Can they be excommunicated or is that strictly a religious edict?
The Montana Democratic Party is not treating Bankhead poorly. It's certain prominent Democrats (and non-partisan organizations) supporting Bodnar that are the problem.
Frankly, I've seen nothing positive from the MT Dem Party about Bankhead. So, tell me, what are they doing? I went down to get a sign that Alani told me I could pick up and of course the door is locked as it usually is and a sign on the door said to call this number. Well, I didn't have my phone on me; it was back in the car, where I'd had to park it over a block away. I do want to see them getting behind her and all of their candidates but I'm not seeing it. Show I'm going to need some Show and Tell.
Emily Marburger, the Executive Director, has written several very strong op eds in support of Bankhead. And I know most of the staff are on board with giving Alani all the help she needs. There might be issues with some of the branch offices having the resources they need?
I've read these; I'm just haven't been convinced that she speaks for the majority of members. I know the greatest problem is with a few outspoken members but, now with others signing on for write-in campaigns with the S.O.S., I am even more concerned.
Emily is doing what she can in my opinion, but have you seen anyone else from the Executive Committee of the State Democratic Party posting about backing Alani? The absence of lackluster support says it all. This is Montana's US Senate candidate going to be representing Us in DC in probably the 2ND MOST POWERFUL BODY of PEOPLE in the WORLD the US SENATE only 50 of them for six years!!! Another person that was in the Executive committee I think?Joe? Now is a maybe Cascade County Board member? I can't remember the details of that post for sure, they wrote a letter for Alani. He said that he wasn't okay with the shenanigans basically. Also on Facebook.
You are the one raising the doubts about what the MT Dem Party is doing to support Bankhead. Since you are the one needing that information I suggest you write to the Party and ask them what they are doing to support Bankhead. Then you will or won’t be satisfied.
furthermore I was at the platform convention and there was definitely mixed messages it was clear that there was something going on but we really couldn't figure out what until after that I think is when Seth filed. now since then 17th state legislators have written a letter in support of " unity between Seth and Alani and this is just smoking mirrors
she is the democratically elected Democratic primary winning candidate for the US Senate from Montana. that's it for the Democratic Party
he could have run in the primary but he didn't because he doesn't want to stand up to anyone or debate them and the person up there that said about him asking her to debate him is false
quite the contrary she called him back she posted online on Facebook about this and all he said was asking her to drop out and she said no and that was it
if you look at her post online you'll see or else go to her website and read everything that's there
sorry about the typos I have to get ready to go volunteer
sir I don't think that that's our job and I am a member of the democratic party in Missoula and an assistant committee woman precinct
I have tried a few emails but I haven't had time to read all the bylaws and write a certified letter to the local board here they are pretty much to the exclusion of everyone else supporting Sam and doing nothing for Alani even though some of us have complained other members of the local party have complained I'm going to volunteer at the fair and I'll bet you 100% all they have about is Sam Forester campaign materials
if you look online you'll see Lorraine Bond did send them a letter asking them if she's invited to the August 22nd big annual barbecue and fundraiser here in Missoula
I also asked them in the email to write a letter like some of the other counties have done supporting her which they refused to do
they're also not having the usual Central committee meeting this month apparently because of the fundraiser so we are not able to even bring this to a vote even though I said that everyone should be on the record whether they want to write the letter or not from the Central Committee of Missoula County Democrats
and even if we did write letters to the state leadership and athlete has done for the Missoula County leadership it would probably be a fruitless endeavor. as so many people have discussed that the state leadership is not listening to the people and the same with the DNC and some of the counties like Missoula which to me is shocking
and I must continue to disagree -- it's not nonpartisan organizations that are backing Bodner it's a bunch of PACS and SUPER PACS. I posted his FEC I think Russell posted it before too.
It’s also supposedly non-partisan organizations like Montana Conservation Voters. I won’t be donating to any PAC or non-partisan organization
supporting Bodnar. For long-term success of the Democratic party and to break the terrible hold the Republican Party has on many voters in our two-party we need to rebuild the Democratic brand. We don’t do that by voting for independents.
I agree but the Montana Conservation Voters and some of the others are not having nearly the monetary impact as the PACs and SUPER PACS! I started the organization I did because of this mess. if it ends up that it has enough influence to get Dems to get their ducks in a row, great. I'll continue to be a Democrat. The political organization that I founded, Life1st USA, is about a set of ideals. It's not necessarily going to be a political party, but it could be at some time in the future. Or it could promote a candidate to run in the Democratic primaries. Everyone I talked to tonight at the Fair was just flabbergasted at the mess and what people are doing to Alani. Even someone came up to me that are not Democrats and telling me how they cannot believe the way she's being treated. Others are just so disappointed that we didn't have a complete Landslide this election because of the mess of the old guard of the Party. You saw how they fought Abdul El-Sayed? $70 million that the DNC, or Democratic pacs and donors, spent against him in the primary because they won't accept a socialist candidate -- they wanted the Old guard to stay in place. Sound familiar? the traditional ways of working with the party are not working obviously. also in other states Democratic candidates are withdrawing so that Independents can run, so this is a strategy! It's not happenstance and it's for a reason, and I believe the biggest reason is data centers.
Now it's up on Facebook, I haven't found the proof yet, but Jamie Woodman wrote in for the US Senate race. So now there's technically five people running for the US Senate in the general election. That's messed up. All this should have been figured out before the primaries. It's a winner takes all situation, and unless every other person drops out besides Alani, Elmo wll win.
Wow. Once again, you just find the nails and take a solid hammer to them! I agree with every word that points to an issue, mostly they are ones that don't or shouldn't exist. These are some of my favorite sentences: "I can’t remember the last time a major candidate with such a small budget has gotten so much traction in Montana. I know I’m not alone in becoming very tired of having every campaign focus entirely on who has raised the most money." My concern has long been, why does someone in this day of social media and the automobile need money to run a campaign? Maybe we should look at giving potential candidates a purse to run in the primary; maybe we should make it a non-partisan primary where only their words and deeds put them forward for our consideration; maybe we should look at an election system that ranks the candidates and the top ones win. Believe me, I don't know what rod could get pushed into the cogs of that machine to screw it up and I'm sure there are many, but what I am trying to say is this system is broken and we need fixes.
We should have more women in elected offices and serving on appointed benches and working in key positions that set policy, and I understand that at least 90 women veterans from across the political spectrum who are answering the call to serve and are running for office this year; we need more People of Color for this representational form of government to truly work; we need more people from diverse professional specialties and yes, those disabilities to serve because the elitism and exclusionary practices of the past isn’t working.
I've never been a "political person," and while I might have assisted a candidate, I've never campaigned and fought for one. Alani Bankhead is my first and it is because I believe in her as someone, the someone; the best suited person for this seat in the Senate and the one who will get things done. I am sick and tired of the politicians whose staff writes me letters pretending to be the elected official and they will pretend that I didn't criticize their bills and beliefs and in fact, that I’m their buddy, one who is working alongside them on their path to destroy our Democracy.
Whenever a naysayer asks a question about Bankhead's position, I offer: Get ahold of her! She is the most accessible candidate I've ever known. And, for the opposition, they think they are in this race all by themselves and I think that women who think independently and who are well-versed in misogyny and a “Women’s Place,” are simply not going to vote for either one of them. I can also hope that well-informed men in this state will understand where we women are coming from and vote similarly. Get Registered; Get your ballot by whatever means you must and VOTE!
there has been calls for Public funding of elections for some time it's just never taken hold probably all the people that have money don't want that to happen.
And now National Indivisible is asking the group leaders in Montana to sign a letter asking her to drop out. I find this insulting and problematic on many levels. Thanks for using your platform to promote a candidate you believe in.
As someone who's been participating with Indivisible I'm very disappointed by this literally there's no words other than to say I am so extremely disappointed, and I don't think that that's consistent with their members ideals.
Russell has appeared in the Daily Montanan and while I donate to the "freer" presses all the other state newspapers require a subscription to read more than a dozen words of any article. I certainly hope they paid him for his opinion pieces. I haven't even seen an option for buying an article from any newspaper lately. I want all journalists to be paid for their work and so maybe Substack and other platforms are the way this is going to go. My own local newspaper bounces back from about $20.00 per month for digital and when I call and say no they quickly go down to $2.00 and I ask: "Why not accept the $4.00 I have been paying" and I get lip. They were accepting that amount but then 6 weeks later they do it all over again.
as to the question about the executive state board they can be recalled Lea Lorraine Bossler has posted about this she also posted clips from the eboard emails related to this topic of the US Senate race
Seth Bodnar is seriously considering dropping out of the senate race. Tester and Schumer are polling to see if Steve Bullock would be a good Democratic candidate for the Senate. I would still support a woman like Alani Bankhead as senator but realistically if Bullock decides to run he most likely would get elected in November. As a Montanan who supports Democrats gaining control of the Senate is critical especially with the Trump administration in office.
That would be a fascinating development, although I sure wasn't impressed with Bullock's previous effort to run for the senate. He waited way too long to declare.
Bodnar’s decision to withdraw would be based on another suitable candidate to enter the race. He didn’t address the issue that Alani Bankhead is the democratic candidate for senate while he’s the independent candidate which he thought would get him elected in November. Frankly I never thought that Bodnar could get elected and defeat a Republican in the general election.
His camp keeps claiming that the polls are saying he would win in a one-on-one election against Alme, but I don't buy it either. Most of the people I know who supports Alani would never vote for Bodnar.
The fact that Bodnar is considering an exit from the senate race tells me he’s not polling well. I had my doubts about Bodnar when he hired as President of the UM in 2018.
I've also read that this was someone planting the seed and they had no verification from Steve at all. So, I'd need to see more on that from reliable sources. I would be furious if he joined this race, at this time, to further disrupt the proceedings.
the idea of Bodner who already did not run in the primaries insisting upon someone suitable to replace him is again ridiculous. That is not democracy it's not how it works now. If we want to change how it works that has to be done before the general election. We could have ranked choice voting and other alternative election decision making but that's not what's happening now and it's a two-way race only, or Alme will win.
I'll be volunteering the next three nights anyone can come talk to me and I don't know who else will be there if we'll be free to talk but there's certain people in the county Dems who are backing aulani and certain people who are backing quote unity or Seth. think about who all lives in Missoula Carol Williams Seth bodnar him for steak Shannon O'Brien
Again sorry about all the typos y'all I do everything on my Android phone and it will not let me edit any comments and all I do is talk into the phone and then I usually edit it right after but Substack doesn't allow me to do that!😞
and for the more the state executive committee and Leadership is not all in favor of getting aulani elected some of them are back in staff for some unknown reason this is such a big mess it's unreal I grew up in a Democratic party in North Dakota and I'm just saying I don't think this crap would ever happen there nobody would tolerate it there
the time for these discussions is when people are running in the primary
from what I understand and what was posted there was about 1/3 of the executive committee for aulani 1/3 would not say and 1/3 were in favor of Seth and this was after he had already started running and after the platform convention and after the primaries
this is a ridiculous State of affairs and it's all because John tester is on anthropic advisory committee and Seth will do whatever Jon tells him and they want to get data centers in here!
Russell, you clearly have not done your research on Alina, nor have you done your research on the Univ of Montana sex discrimination case.

I myself am trying to have a event for Alani it's best if she has three in one day. I need some help putting it together if anyone wants to private message me! Or anyone that wants to have another event on the same day... seems like some folks missed the events almost 2 weeks ago now? Her schedule is easily accessible on her website.
My understanding so far is he won't even debate her that kind of tells you all you need to know doesn't it?
no big surprise. it's despicable
I have read Alani's own words that say he has said publicly that he has tried but she refuses to meet. She adamantly refutes this "misstatement."
The irony that Pat Williams said that about favoring Hillary Clinton and now Carol Williams is calling for Alani to duck. There's so much chaos that makes no sense it's insane. That's why I started my new organization, Life1st. It's really simple if you just stick to the values that matter.
I definitely thought about that as I was writing this. :)

Yes, I agree. The party committee has been very much in suppoert of Alani

That, Sir, is your prerogative.🇺🇸
It's our only hope.

I applaud your conviction Russ! Keep up the good work!
The heart emoji isn't large enough for how much I love this column! Thank you.
It needs to be on opinion pages throughout the state. Please!
Montana Free Press and Missoula Current would be good places to start, since they're both online/free of paywalls.
And be sure to tag Alani on FB so we're sure she reads and shares it too.
Onward ! To the US Senate.

Or anyone that wants to have another event on the same day... seems like some folks missed the events almost 2 weeks ago now? Her schedule is easily accessible on her website.
