Sargent and Billy Conway spent more than thirty years together, both playing in successful rock bands. In 2009, they moved to Montana for several years, and often talked about why it was that more Native American musicians didn’t get a chance to play or record. In 2020, Billy was diagnosed with cancer, and when he passed away in 2022, Laurie decided to create a grant program in his name, aimed specifically at providing funding and support for Native American artists. The first recipient of The Billy Conway Artist Fund is Hip Hop artist Foreshadow, from the Blackfeet reservation. Foreshadow’s first album, Perfect Timing, is coming out this month, and he has several events coming up. I had a great talk with Laurie about how this idea came to her and how they developed a mentor program to support the fund.
